Seed germination is an important development process in plant growth. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays a critical role during seed germination. However, the mechanism of rapeseed in response to ABA is still elusive. In order to understand changes of rapeseed under exogenous ABA treatment, we explored differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between mock- and ABA-treated seedlings. A widely targeted LC-MS/MS based metabolomics were used to identify and quantify metabolic changes in response to ABA during seed germination, and a total of 186 significantly DEMs were identified. There are many compounds which are involved in ABA stimuli, especially some specific ABA transportation-related metabolites such as starches and lipids were screened out. Meanwhile, a total of 4440 significantly DEGs were identified by transcriptomic analyses. There was a significant enrichment of DEGs related to phenylpropanoid and cell wall organization. It suggests that exogenous ABA mainly affects seed germination by regulating cell wall loosening. Finally, the correlation analysis of the key DEMs and DEGs indicates that many DEGs play a direct or indirect regulatory role in DEMs metabolism. The integrative analysis between DEGs and DEMs suggests that the starch and sucrose pathways were the key pathway in ABA responses. The two metabolites from starch and sucrose pathways, levan and cellobiose, both were found significantly down-regulated in ABA-treated seedlings. These comprehensive metabolic and transcript analyses provide useful information for the subsequent post-transcriptional modification and post germination growth of rapeseed in response to ABA signals and stresses.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Raoultella ornithinolytica (R. ornithinolytica) have attracted clinical attention as a new type of pathogen. A wide range of infections with these germs is reported, and commonly found in urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and bacteremia. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an elderly woman with liver abscess, choledocholithiasis and cholangitis, who developed gastric fistula and abdominal abscess after underwent choledocholithotomy, and R. ornithinolytica were isolated from the abdominal drainage fluid. The patient was treated with meropenem and levofloxacin and had a good outcome. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, case of isolating R. ornithinolytica from a patient with non-viscerally abdominal abscess was extremely rare. We share a case of a woman with non-viscerally abdominal abscess secondary to postoperative gastric fistula, R. ornithinolytica was isolated from the patient's pus, and the pathogenic bacteria may originate from the gastrointestinal tract. Based on this case, We should be cautious that invasive treatment may greatly increase the probability of infection with this pathogenic bacterium.

BACKGROUND: Tumor metastasis and recurrence are major causes of mortality in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that is still lack of effective therapeutic targets and drugs. Previous reports implied that ras homolog family member C (RhoC) plays a toxic role on metastasis and proliferation of cancer. METHODS: In this research, the correlation between RhoC and metastasis ability was confirmed by in vitro experiments and TCGA database. We explored whether quercetin could inhibit cell migration or invasion by transwell assay. Real-time PCR, overexpression and ubiquitination assay, etc. were applied in mechanism study. Primary HCC cells and animal models including patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) were employed to evaluate the anti-metastasis effects of quercetin. RESULTS: Clinical relevance and in vitro experiments further confirmed the level of RhoC was positively correlated with invasion and metastasis ability of HCC. Then we uncovered that quercetin could attenuate invasion and metastasis of HCC by downregulating RhoC's level in vitro, in vivo and PDXs. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations displayed quercetin hindered the E3 ligase expression of SMAD specific E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 2 (SMURF2) leading to enhancement of RhoC's ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. CONCLUSIONS: Our research has revealed the novel mechanisms quercetin regulates degradation of RhoC level by targeting SMURF2 and identified quercetin may be a potential compound for HCC therapy.

The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) is a measure of intuitive eating behaviors that has been extensively validated, with traditional latent variable modeling approaches, in youth and adults from many different populations, including college students in China. However, there is still a lack of research on the psychometric properties of the IES-2 in adults from the Chinese general population. Moreover, psychometric network analysis, as a complement to traditional latent variable modeling approaches, has not been used for examining the psychometric properties of the IES-2. Thus, the present study used a psychometric network approach to evaluate the psychometric properties of the IES-2 in Chinese adults from the general population. A sample of 700 Chinese general adults (50% women; Mage = 31.13 years, SD = 9.19) recruited online were included in the present study. Psychometric network analysis was performed. Exploratory graph analysis (EGA) identified four dimensions, which were well separated in the estimated network. The network structure showed excellent stability and metric measurement invariance (i.e., network loadings) across men and women. Furthermore, several items on the IES-2 were identified as key nodes in the network of the IES-2 that may be important for the development and maintenance of intuitive eating. For example, two items (i.e., "I trust my body to tell me when to eat," and "I trust my body to tell me when to stop eating") related to reliance on body cues were the most impactful nodes in the complete network. The findings of our study provide a greater understanding of the IES-2 from the perspective of network analysis and have implications for applications of intuitive eating interventions for general populations.

Our prophase studies have manifested that the sweet triterpenoid glycoside from the leaves of Cyclocarya paliurus (CPST) effectively improved the disorders of glucolipid metabolism in vitro and in patients. The current purpose was to further detect its mechanisms involved. The results demonstrated that CPST could ameliorate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced insulin resistance (IR), which was linked to reducing HFD-induced mice's body weight, serum glucose (GLUO), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (T-CHO) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), lowering the area under the oral glucose tolerance curve and insulin tolerance, elevating the percentage of brown adipose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), reducing fat droplets of adipocytes in interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) and cross-sectional area of adipocytes. Further studies manifested that CPST obviously downregulated TLR4, MyD88, NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, cleased-caspase-1, IL-18, IL-1ß, TXNIP, and GSDMD protein expressions and p-NF-кB/NF-кB ratio in iBAT. These aforementioned findings demonstrated that CPST ameliorated HFD induced IR by regulating TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway, which in turn enhancing insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.

Hypotonia, Ataxia, Developmental Delay, and Tooth Enamel Defect Syndrome (HADDTS) is an exceptionally rare disorder resulting from a heterozygous variant in the C-terminal binding protein 1 (CTBP1) gene. To date, a mere two variants (14 patients) have been documented on a global scale. The aim of this study was to identify a causative CTBP1 variant in a Chinese patient, and to determine the potential pathogenicity of the identified variant. Here, Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was conducted on the proband to pinpoint the candidate variant. Following this, Sanger sequencing was employed to validate the identified candidate variant and examine its co-segregation within the available family members. Employing both in silico prediction and three-dimensional protein modeling, we conducted an analysis to assess the potential functional implications of the variant on the encoded protein. Our investigation led to the identification of a novel heterozygous variant in the CTBP1 gene, namely, c.371 C>T (p.Ser124Phe), in a Chinese patient. This case represents the first confirmed instance of such a variant in a Chinese patient. When comparing the patient's clinical symptoms with those reported in the literature, notable distinctions were observed between her primary symptoms and those associated with HADDTS. She showed other signs such as microcephaly, coarse facial features, single transverse palmar crease, visible beard, myopia, coarse toenail and skeletal anomalies. This study enriching the spectrum of genetic variants observed in different ethnic populations and expanding the phenotypic profile associated with this gene. These findings are expected to contribute to the enhancement of future variant-based screening and genetic diagnosis, while also providing further insights into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying CTBP1-related conditions.

Mercury (Hg) pollution not only poses a threat to the environment but also adversely affects the growth and development of plants, with potential repercussions for animals and humans through bioaccumulation in the food chain. Maize, a crucial source of food, industrial materials, and livestock feed, requires special attention in understanding the genetic factors influencing mercury accumulation. Developing maize varieties with low mercury accumulation is vital for both maize production and human health. In this study, a comprehensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using an enlarged SNP panel comprising 1.25 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 230 maize inbred lines across three environments. The analysis identified 111 significant SNPs within 78 quantitative trait loci (QTL), involving 169 candidate genes under the Q model. Compared to the previous study, the increased marker density and optimized statistical model led to the discovery of 74 additional QTL, demonstrating improved statistical power. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis revealed that most genes participate in arsenate reduction and stress responses. Notably, GRMZM2G440968, which has been reported in previous studies, is associated with the significant SNP chr6.S_155668107 in axis tissue. It encodes a cysteine proteinase inhibitor, implying its potential role in mitigating mercury toxicity by inhibiting cysteine. Haplotype analyses provided further insights, indicating that lines carrying hap3 exhibited the lowest mercury content compared to other haplotypes. In summary, our study significantly enhances the statistical power of GWAS, identifying additional genes related to mercury accumulation and metabolism. These findings offer valuable insights into unraveling the genetic basis of mercury content in maize and contribute to the development of maize varieties with low mercury accumulation.

Chemotherapeutic drugs to activate the cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway have been exploited for tumor chemoimmunotherapy. The clinical translation of chemotherapeutic cGAS-STING activators is hindered by the lack of safe, efficient, and specific delivery strategies. Nanodrug delivery systems (NDDS) designed for reducing toxic effects and improving transport effectiveness potentiate in vivo delivery of chemotherapeutic cGAS-STING activators. cGAS-STING monotherapy often encounters tumor resistance without providing satisfactory therapeutic benefit; therefore combination therapy is desirable. This review describes NDDS strategies for surmounting delivery obstacles of chemotherapeutic cGAS-STING activators and highlights combinatorial regimens, which utilize therapeutics that work by different mechanisms, for optimal therapy.

Mammalian cell lines are frequently used as the preferred host cells for producing recombinant therapeutic proteins (RTPs) having post-translational modified modification similar to those observed in proteins produced by human cells. Nowadays, most RTPs approved for marketing are produced in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Recombinant therapeutic antibodies are among the most important and promising RTPs for biomedical applications. One of the issues that occurs during development of RTPs is their degradation, which caused by a variety of factors and reducing quality of RTPs. RTP degradation is especially concerning as they could result in reduced biological functions (antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and complement-dependent cytotoxicity) and generate potentially immunogenic species. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying RTP degradation and strategies for avoiding degradation have regained an interest from academia and industry. In this review, we outline recent progress in this field, with a focus on factors that cause degradation during RTP production and the development of strategies for overcoming RTP degradation. KEY POINTS: • The recombinant therapeutic protein degradation in CHO cell systems is reviewed. • Enzymatic factors and non-enzymatic methods influence recombinant therapeutic protein degradation. • Reducing the degradation can improve the quality of recombinant therapeutic proteins.

Achieving separation of lithium and magnesium with similar radii is crucial for the current lithium extraction technology from salt lakes, which usually possess a high lithium-to-magnesium ratio. Herein, we proposed the facile sequential interfacial polymerization (SIP) approach to construct electronanofiltration membranes (ENFMs) with a bilayer charged structure consisting of a high positively charged surface and a negatively charged sublayer. The trimesoyl chloride (TMC) concentration was adjusted to enhance the -COOH content and negative charge of the polyamide sublayer to promote Li+ migration, and then the quaternized polyethylenimine was introduced to the membrane surface by the SIP process to increase the positive charge density on the surface of the ENFMs, which would block the migration of Mg2+ and enhance the Li+/Mg2+ selectivity of the ENFMs. The optimal quaternary-modified ENFMs achieved outstanding selectivity for Li+/Mg2+ (49.85) and high Li+ flux (4.10 × 10-8 mol cm-2 s-1) at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Moreover, in simulated brines with low lithium concentration and high Mg2+/Li+ ratio, the optimal ENFMs also displayed elevated Li+/Mg2+ selectivity (>45), highlighting the substantial promise of the membranes for practical applications.

A portion of carbon produced from shellfish and kelp cultivation is buried in sedimentary environment, and mariculture carbon sequestration potential is an important part of marine carbon sink and has attracted worldwide attention. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and their stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N), as well as the mass distribution of these size-fractionated particles were determined in order to study the distribution and sources of TOC in Sanggou Bay. Results showed that sediment organic matter has complex sources from kelp (30.4 %), marine phytoplankton (25.6 %), shellfish (23.7 %), terrestrial input (20.3 %), and mariculture activities of shellfish and kelp was the major component in surface sediment. Approximately 44-69 % of TOC was associated with the 16-32 µm fraction. Low δ13C (-22.1 to -15.1‰) and high δ15N (5.0-5.7‰) were observed in fine particles (<16 µm), indicating relatively high contribution of marine phytoplankton and mariculture derived organic carbon. On the contrary, relatively higher δ13C (-20.2 to -9.2‰) and lower values δ15N (-4.7 to 5.2‰) in coarse particles (>32 µm) suggested that sedimentary organic carbon might be influenced by some additional sources from terrestrial input or seaweed. The mass distribution, δ13C and δ15N of size-fractionated particles in sediments indicated that sediment was obviously redistributed under the condition of mariculture, and further suggested that mariculture derived organic matter have modified the distribution and sources of sedimentary organic matter. This study provided great insight into distribution and source of sedimentary organic carbon from the perspective of size-fractionated particles in mariculture area.

BACKGROUND: The present study aims to investigate the network structure of depressive symptoms, the interrelationships between individual personality traits and depressive symptoms, and gender differences among Chinese older people aged 60 and above. METHOD: We performed network analyses with a regularized Graphical Gaussian Model and a case-dropping bootstrap approach. A sample of 4876 older Chinese people aged 60+ was included in the analyses. We investigated the central symptoms in the depression network and the bridge nodes that connect personality facets and depressive symptoms. Gender differences were investigated by testing the global strength, network invariance, and edge weights. RESULTS: Sadness and depressed mood were the most central depressive symptoms, while somatic symptoms such as restless sleep were the least central. Neurotic facets, particularly "worry a lot" and "get nervous easily", played significant bridging roles in the web of personality traits and depressive symptoms. Gender differences were observed in three edges among different personality traits (rude-worried, original-worried, and forgiving-nervous). LIMITATION: The study adopts a cross-sectional dataset, and therefore, cannot track the network changes over time or conclude a causal relationship. DISCUSSION: The study calls for more focus and prioritization on sadness, depressed mood and neurotic traits in the identification of depression among older Chinese people. Future researchers and practitioners should better understand of older Chinese adults' worry and nervousness to develop appropriate practices and policies.

As a maternal tissue, the pericarp supports and protects for other components of seed, such as embryo and endosperm. Despite the importance of maize pericarp in seed, the genome-wide transcriptome pattern throughout maize pericarp development has not been well characterized. Here, we developed RNA-seq transcriptome atlas of B73 maize pericarp development based on 21 samples from 5 days before fertilization (DBP5) to 32 days after fertilization (DAP32). A total of 25 346 genes were detected in programming pericarp development, including 1887 transcription factors (TFs). Together with pericarp morphological changes, the global clustering of gene expression revealed four developmental stages: undeveloped, thickening, expansion and strengthening. Coexpression analysis provided further insights on key regulators in functional transition of four developmental stages. Combined with non-seed, embryo, endosperm, and nucellus transcriptome data, we identified 598 pericarp-specific genes, including 75 TFs, which could elucidate key mechanisms and regulatory networks of pericarp development. Cell wall related genes were identified that reflected their crucial role in the maize pericarp structure building. In addition, key maternal proteases or TFs related with programmed cell death (PCD) were proposed, suggesting PCD in the maize pericarp was mediated by vacuolar processing enzymes (VPE), and jasmonic acid (JA) and ethylene-related pathways. The dynamic transcriptome atlas provides a valuable resource for unraveling the genetic control of maize pericarp development.

Both materials and structures can significantly affect radiative heat transfer, which is more pronounced in the near-field regime of two-dimensional and hyperbolic materials, and has promising prospects in thermophotovoltaics, radiative cooling, and nanoscale metrology. Hence, it is important to investigate the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) in complicated heterostructures consisting of two-dimensional and hyperbolic materials. Recent studies have reported that adding vacuum layers to multilayer structures can effectively enhance the NFRHT. Take the case of multilayer graphene/α-MoO3 heterostructures: the effect of vacuum layers on these heterostructures has not been studied, and hence investigations on adding vacuum layers between graphene and α-MoO3 layers should be emphasized. In this work, we conduct an investigation of the NFRHT between multilayer graphene/vacuum/α-MoO3/vacuum heterostructures. Compared to unit graphene/α-MoO3 heterostructures without vacuum layers, it is found that NFRHT between the heterostructures with vacuum layers can be suppressed to 49.1% when the gap distance is 10 nm, and can be enhanced to 16.3% when the gap distance is 100 nm. These phenomena are thoroughly explained by the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons and hyperbolic phonon polaritons. Energy transmission coefficients and spectral heat flux are analysed during the calculations changing chemical potentials of graphene, thicknesses of vacuum layers, and α-MoO3 layers. This study is expected to provide guidance in implementing the thermal management of reasonable NFRHT devices based on graphene/α-MoO3 heterostructures.

Coxsackievirus Group B type 5 (CVB5), an important pathogen of hand-foot-mouth disease, is also associated with neurological complications and poses a public health threat to young infants. Among the CVB5 proteins, the nonstructural protein 3D, known as the Enteroviral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, is mainly involved in viral genome replication and transcription. In this study, we performed immunoprecipitation coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to identify host proteins that interacted with CVB5 3D polymerase. A total of 116 differentially expressed proteins were obtained. Gene Ontology analysis identified that the proteins were involved in cell development and cell adhesion, distributed in the desmosome and envelope, and participated in GTPase binding. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis further revealed they participated in nerve diseases, such as Parkinson disease. Among them, 35 proteins were significantly differentially expressed and the cellular protein TGF-BATA-activated kinase1 binding protein 1 (TAB1) was found to be specifically interacting with the 3D polymerase. 3D polymerase facilitated the entry of TAB1 into the nucleus and down-regulated TAB1 expression via the lysosomal pathway. In addition, TAB1 inhibited CVB5 replication via inducing inflammatory factors and activated the NF-κB pathway through IκBα phosphorylation. Moreover, the 90-96aa domain of TAB1 was an important structure for the function. Collectively, our findings demonstrate the mechanism by which cellular TAB1 inhibits the CVB5 replication via activation of the host innate immune response, providing a novel insight into the virus-host innate immunity.

Background: Cancer as a global public health problem, imposes a heavy disease burden. With the rapid development of oral anti-neoplastic drugs, there has been a paradigm shift in the treatment of cancer from intravenous to oral administration. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the trends and prescribing patterns of oral anti-neoplastic drugs in an academic tertiary hospital in China. Methods: A single-center and retrospective analysis was performed based on the prescriptions of outpatients treated with oral anti-neoplastic drugs from 2017 to 2022. Yearly prescriptions and expenditure were calculated according to their pharmacological classes, and trends were further analyzed. Defined daily doses (DDDs) and defined daily cost (DDC) of oral targeted anti-neoplastic drugs were also determined. Results: Both the number of prescriptions and expenditure of oral anti-neoplastic drugs increased progressively. There was a significant upward trend in the number and proportion of prescriptions for the older adult group, male group, and patients with gynecologic/genitourinary and respiratory cancer. Hormonal therapy agents accounted for the highest proportion of prescriptions, and letrozole was initially the most frequently prescribed drug. The number of DDDs of total oral targeted anti-neoplastic drugs showed a continuously ascending trend, primarily driven by the usage of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and BCR-ABL TKIs. Conclusion: The prescriptions and expenditure of oral anti-neoplastic drugs, and the number of DDDs of oral targeted anti-neoplastic drugs all showed a progressively ascending trend. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term health and financial outcomes, and the factors influencing these prescribing patterns.

SSBP2-CSF1R is an important biomarker for clinical diagnosis and prognosis of Philadelphia chromosome-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph-like ALL). This case report presents a pediatric Ph-like ALL patient carrying the SSBP2-CSF1R fusion gene. The patient was resistant to most conventional chemotherapy regimens and to dasatinib, an inhibitor that has been reported to have a therapeutic effect on SSBP2-CSF1R fusion Ph-like ALL, as she remained minimal residual disease (MRD) positive (detection by flow cytometry) and SSBP2-CSF1R fusion gene (detection by RT-PCR) positive after five rounds of such regimens. We thus conducted a large-scale in vitro screening to assess the sensitivity of the patient's leukemic cells to anti-cancer drugs. Based on the susceptibility results, we chose to combine cytarabine, homoharringtonine, dexamethasone, fludarabine, vindesine, and epirubicin for treatment. Clinical results showed that after a course of treatment, both MRD and SSBP2-CSF1R fusion gene turned negative, and there was no recurrence during an 18-month follow-up. In conclusion, our study suggests that the SSBP2-CSF1R fusion gene may be an important biomarker of primary drug resistance in Ph-like ALL, and indicate that the combination of cytarabine, homoharringtonine, dexamethasone, fludarabine, vindesine, and epirubicin can achieve optimal therapeutic results in this category of patients.

Cyclocarya paliurus (Batalin) Iljinskaja (C. paliurus) is a single species of Cyclocarya paliurus in Juglandaceae. It is a unique rare medicinal plant resource in China that is mainly distributed in the south of China. The leaves of C. paliurus, as a new food ingredient, are processed into tea products in daily life. Triterpenoids are the main active ingredient in C. paliurus. So far, 164 triterpenoid compounds have been isolated and identified from C. paliurus, which are included 3,4-seco-dammaranes, dammaranes, oleanane, ursane, lupinanes, taraxeranes, and norceanothanes. Modern pharmacological studies manifested that these ingredients have a wide range of pharmacological activities both in vitro and in vivo, such as reducing blood sugar, lowering blood lipids, and anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and other activities. In addition, current results indicate that the pharmacological mechanisms of triterpenoids were closely related to their chemical structure, molecular signaling pathways, and the expression of related proteins. In order to further study C. paliurus based on the current research situation, this review summarizes the prospect and systematic summary of the triterpenes of C. paliurus from the aspects of structural characteristics, quality control, biological activity, and the structure-activity relationship, which provide a reference for further research and application of the triterpenoids from C. paliurus in the field of functional food and medicine.

RESUMO

Benzophenones (BPs) have wide practical applications in real human life due to its presence in personal care products, UV-filters, drugs, food packaging bags, etc. It enters the wastewater by daily routine activities such as showering, impacting the whole aquatic system, then posing a threat to human health. Due to this fact, the monitoring and removal of BPs in the environment is quite important. In the past decade, various novel analytical and removal techniques have been developed for the determination of BPs in environmental samples including wastewater, municipal landfill leachate, sewage sludge, and aquatic plants. This review provides a critical summary and comparison of the available cutting-edge pretreatment, determination and removal techniques of BPs in environment. It also focuses on novel materials and techniques in keeping with the concept of "green chemistry", and describes on challenges associated with the analysis of BPs, removal technologies, suggesting future development strategies.

The aquaculture of Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) is under threat due to its high mortality in summer. To investigate the environmental influence on mortality of the species, we have conducted field surveys in the aquaculture area in Laizhou Bay, during the summers of 2019 and 2020. Environmental and biological data were collected. The results of data analysis have shown that in 2020, large-scale mortality events were not recorded and spatial variations of environmental variables were no significant within the survey area. However, in August 2019, significant variations of environmental variables were detected in the middle tidal area. This area was charactered with relatively high-water temperature (with maximum temperature of 31.49 °C and mean value of 26.17 ± 1.62 °C), elevated hydrogen sulfide concentrations (with a maximum concentration of 24.72 µmol/L and a mean concentration of 7.89 ± 4.14 µmol/L), and low dissolved oxygen concentrations (with a minimum concentration of 3.35 mg/L and a mean concentration of 6.27 ± 0.42 mg/L). Correspondingly, high mortality of the clam was recorded in the area, the abundance of live Manila clams has decreased by 80%. No significant abnormalities of environmental variables and clam growth were observed in other regions in 2019. Glycogen content and condition index of the clam were analyzed to investigate the relationship between environmental stress and the health of the clam. Compared to the condition index, glycogen content is a more sensitive indicator of the health status of the clam because changes in glycogen content appeared earlier than changes in condition index and mortality. A principal component analysis further indicated that the high mortality of the clam corresponds with a few environmental variables, including elevated temperature, hypoxia and the concentration of hydrogen sulfide. The simultaneous presence of these multiple environmental stressors could have triggered alterations in the physiological responses of the clam.
